Porridge with Plums and Blueberries

After enjoying most of the plum compote on soda bread, I put the remainder in my water porridge with some blueberries. I topped it with some of the muesli I made.

Plum Compote

When I bought some plums which turned out to be hard and woody, I converted them to compote by simmering them with a stick of cinnamon and a little annato seed in water with a little ruby port. After a long simmer, the liquid evaporated and the plums now have a much more intense flavour. The compote is nice on its own, or it can be put on bread or added to yoghurt.

Steamed Plum-Filled Dumplings with Vanilla Sauce

I had a craving for Pflaumen Dampfnudeln mit Vanillesoße and normally I’d satisfy that craving by going out, but then I realized that they probably wouldn’t be that difficult to make. I just bought a plum compote and made a basic milk dough, and the vanilla sauce is simply a thin custard. I then steamed the dumplings and served them with the vanilla sauce and sugar mixed with poppy seeds.

Plum season started earlier this month, so I celebrated by making plum dumplings.

Sunday tea: plum cake

On overcast Sunday afternoons, who doesn’t enjoy a bit of tea and cake?  On Friday I picked up some cheap plums which were on the cusp of spoiling with the intention of making plum dumplings.  Instead, I decided I wanted to try a new recipe, so I made this plum cake.
